Phone lines are going digital. Is your business ready?

The old copper phone network is being switched off across the UK, with the programme due to finish by the end of January 2027. Phones are the easy part. It's the alarms, lift lines and card machines on those lines that catch people out.

What's changing

Openreach and BT are moving every landline from the analogue network (often called PSTN) and ISDN onto digital lines that run over broadband. When your line moves, anything that relied on the old network may stop working or need a new connection.

Equipment that can be affected

  • intruder and fire alarms that dial out to a monitoring centre;
  • lift emergency phones;
  • card payment machines on a phone line;
  • door entry systems and gate intercoms;
  • telecare and personal pendant alarms;
  • fax machines, franking machines and older phone systems;
  • ADSL broadband.

Many businesses only find out when something stops working. A short review now means you can plan the change on your terms.
